Aswan Dam
Aswan Dam
Built in 1902 the Aswan Dam was a wonder of its time measuring 2,441 meters long 50 meters high and 30 meters wide. You can visit it through Aswan day tours and it was the largest dam in the world. It is not a tourist attraction if you like to visit it through Egypt tour packages but the road over the dam has wonderful views of the Nile which can be reached through Nile cruise holidays, especially on the way to the airport or Abu Simbel.
History and construction
Plans for the Aswan Dam first began in the late 19th century to address Egypt population growth and the need to expand agricultural land. You can see it for yourself through Egypt tours. British engineer Sir William Wilcox began construction in 1898 at the first cataract using Aswan granite for the dam structure. You can visit it through Egypt private tours if you prefer private tours.
Function and Impact
Originally designed to control the flow of the Nile and prevent flooding the Aswan High Dam was raised twice to increase its agricultural benefits and later to generate hydroelectric power. Today the Aswan Dam powers a nearby fertilizer plant illustrating how its role in Egyptian industry has evolved. You should visit it to explore more information through All-inclusive Egypt vacations.
Legacy and Successor
In 1960 the High Dam located 6 km upstream surpassed the Aswan Dam in size and function but the old dam remains a remnant of 20th century engineering and its importance to the economy and agriculture in Egypt. If you want a tour in Aswan and visit many places, you can do so through Egypt vacation packages through which you can visit more than one place such as the Corniche and watch the beautiful natural scenery on the banks of the Nile and also the Nile Museum which is a museum located on an area of 146 thousand square meters in the city of Aswan.
