The Mamluks who overthrew Saladin’s Ayyubid dynasty expanded the complex. Under the Mamluks lavish palaces and harems were added. During Ottoman rule (1517-1798) the fortress was extended westwards with the addition of Bab Al Azab and Mamluk buildings fell into disrepair.
