Madrassa & Mausoleum of Qalaun
Madrassa and Mausoleum of Qalaun
Built in just 13 months in 1279, this is the oldest and most beautiful of the many mosques on this street. The mausoleum on the right is a work of art in inlaid stone and stucco with stars, floral motifs and stained glass windows, making it a highlight of many Egypt vacation packages.
Commissioned by Sultan Qalaun, the complex also has a maristan hospital, inspired by a similar one he saw in Damascus where he was treated for colic. This historic site is often included in Egypt tours and Egypt holiday packages. Famous Arab traveler and historian Ibn Battuta visited Cairo in 1325 and was impressed by Qalaun’s hospital. He wrote about the many medical instruments and medicines they had, an interesting point often highlighted during Cairo day tours. He also noted that the Quran was being recited day and night in the mausoleum where the deceased were buried. For those interested in Egypt woman tours, this site offers a unique glimpse into the rich history and culture of Egypt.
