Mosque of Al Hakim
Built in 1013 the Mosque of Al Hakim is a vast and plain building that is built into the northern walls of Cairo. One of the older mosques in the city it was never used for worship. Instead it was used for various purposes over the centuries as a Crusaders’ prison, a stable, a warehouse, a boys’ school and most fittingly considering its founder a madhouse. Al Hakim the sixth Fatimid ruler of Egypt took the throne at the age of 11. His tutor nicknamed him ‘Little Lizard’ because of his scary looks and behavior. His 24 year reign was marked by violence and behaviour that went far beyond the usual court intrigues; modern historians think he may have been simply mad. Those around him lived in constant fear for their lives. He had his nicknaming tutor killed along with scores of others. Hakim used to go out at night in disguise, riding a donkey. Most notoriously he would punish dishonest merchants by having them dealt with by a well-endowed black servant. His death was as bizarre as his life.
