Amr Ibn Al-As Mosque, the first mosque in Cairo, was built in 642 AD by the conqueror of Egypt for Islam. Originally built with palm trunks covered with leaves on the site where Ibn Al-As pitched his tent, it was expanded to its current size in 827 AD. The mosque has a forest of over 200 columns, many of which are from ancient sites, the oldest part is to the right of the mihrab.
