The story of the discovery of the tomb and all the treasures inside is way more exciting than the actual tomb of a short lived pharaoh. Howard Carter spent 6 seasons in the valley and was rewarded with the tomb of Tutankhamun and all its treasures the biggest haul in Egypt. The first step was found on 4th November 1922 and the rest of the steps and a sealed doorway on 5th November. Carter wired Lord Carnarvon to come to Egypt immediately as he had found what he thought was the intact tomb of Tutankhamun. Son of Akhenaten and one of Akhenatens sisters Tutankhamun ruled for only 9 years (1336–1327 BC) and died young with no great battles or buildings to his name so there was no time to build a tomb. The tomb had been robbed twice in antiquity but the treasure inside vindicated Carter’s dream beyond his wildest imagination. Four rooms were packed with jewellery, furniture, statues, chariots, musical instruments, weapons, boxes, jars and food. Even when it was discovered that many of the treasures had been thrown haphazardly into the wrong boxes by the necropolis officials who were “tidying up” after the ancient robberies it doesn’t detract from their value. Most of the treasure is in the Cairo Museum, a few pieces in the Luxor Museum: only Tutankhamun’s mummy in his gilded wooden coffin and his sarcophagus remain in situ. The burial chamber walls are decorated with chubby pharaohs before the gods painted against a yellow-gold background.
